HMP & YOI Stirling is a new state of the art facility for the Scottish Prison Service for Women in custody in Scotland, and replaces the recently closed HMP Cornton Vale. The design pioneers a therapeutic approach to prisoner care with wellbeing and rehabilitation at it’s heart. The facility provides places for 100 Women, with a wide range of support, education, and wellbeing facilities.

The buildings are arranged within an overall landscaped masterplan with strong relationships to their surroundings. Views to the Forth Valley, Ochil Hills, Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument are framed throughout the facility enhancing this connection to nature and the rich historical environment.

Transparency and a feeling of welcoming are at the core of the design, with high levels of glazing and views through buildings exploited to maximise the biophilic benefits of the external spaces. This connection to nature and openness assists in reducing stress and anxiety, a critical requirement within the challenging brief.
