London South Bank Technical College
Holmes Miller is excited to be providing Architectural services for the delivery of the London South Bank Technical College in south west London, in support of Graham Construction, which has just started on site.
The college in Vauxhall replaces a group 1960’s buildings, which are no longer fit for purpose.
The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) Centre will provide training for skills that align to employment priorities in Lambeth, South London and the Nine Elms regeneration area to meet current and future industry needs.
The ten-storey college is the first phase of a new 5 building campus of learning and student accommodation and comprises teaching and technical facilities including construction workshops, dental laboratories and TV/recording studios.
The building form has a robust portalised brick base with extensive glazing allowing views of the activity of the construction workshops and social spaces, with a hard and soft landscaped public realm of raised planters and natural stone paving. Above the masonry base rises a folded façade of bronze anodised aluminium that creates a landmark tower visible from the Wandsworth Road.
Within the building departments are generally grouped across two floors each with a double-height social learning space forming a ‘digital spine’, on the entrance corner to the building, each with large, framed feature windows providing generous natural daylight and giving expansive views.
The college will cater for over 2,500 full and part-time learners and is funded by the London Education Action Partnership (LEAP).
